You usually burn your intake of calories and then fat. However, if you don’t exercise you will start burning muscle from the parts that aren’t being used instead of burning fat,

    The body can use food, food stores or any of the tissues it’s made of for energy. Exercising, while eating plenty of protein, will make it less likely that your muscles will shrink, yes.
